Match of the Day 1

Cori Gauff, take a bow. On truly a first day to remember, it was the 15-year-old American’s straight-sets win over her idol and five-time champion Venus Williams that will deservedly grab the headlines.

After blazing her way through qualifying last week, the teenager marked her singles debut at the majors with a performance way beyond her years, holding her nerve on No.1 Court to get past the seven-time Grand Slam champion 6-4, 6-4.

Match of the Day 2

With the anticipation building ahead of a potential Rafael NadalNick Kyrgios second round meeting, the Australian first had to negotiate a tricky opening match with in-form countryman Jordan Thompson.

An expectant crowd gathered around No.3 Court at 11am and they weren’t disappointed by a contest that went back and forth during three hours and 26 minutes of play.

The most intriguing passage centred around a 22-point third set tie-break that finally went Kyrgios’ way before the most bizarre of fourth sets that quickly swung Thompson’s way, eventually resulting in a ‘bagel’ in his favour.

Kyrgios regrouped swiftly, broke early in the decider and ran out a 7-6, 3-6, 7-6, 0-6, 6-1 winner to set up Thursday’s blockbuster with Nadal.

Match of the Day 3

While there were victories that required much longer spells on court – Reilly Opelka’s success over Stan Wawrinka 8-6 in the fifth is near the top of that list – few can match Cori Gauff’s second round win over Slovakia’s Magdalena Rybarikova for size of achievement. The American 15-year-old looked cool, calm and confident en route to a 6-3, 6-3 result over the former Wimbledon semi-finalist and in doing so wrote herself into the history books as the winner of the first complete match to be played under the new No.1 Court roof. The teen phenomenon faces Polona Hercog in the third round after the Slovenian beat Madison Keys earlier on Wednesday.
